What is Yahoo App?
Yahoo app is a super app providing users with common services in daily life. These services include a news feature, an e-commerce feature, a coupon feature, etc.
Project Introduction
This project was done during the UXE course directed by Prof. Stanley. Along with five other members, I worked with the Yahoo team. Our goal in this project was to optimize the user experience of the news function on Yahoo App through user research.
Research Goal
The first time my team and I used Yahoo App, we found out the news function took a lot of work to navigate. Therefore, we decided to focus on the news function in this research. On the other hand, the Yahoo App team aimed to acquire more Gen Z users. (Gen Z = Youth aged 16~25) Therefore, the goal of the optimization was to get more Gen Z users to use the news feature.
Generative Research
User Interview
We began by conducting user interviews. The goal of the interviews was to understand the behaviors, needs, and pain points of Gen Z users when receiving news. We ended up conducting three pilot interviews and eleven formal interviews. The age of interviewees ranged from 21 to 25 years old. Down below are some questions that we asked in interviews.
Understand Behavior
"How do you usually receive news from around the world?"
Explore Motivation
"Under what circumstances do you actively follow an event?"
Insight into Needs
"What feelings you have when using news apps?"
We analyzed the feedback using affinity diagrams and summarized six key findings. We categorized these findings into three scenario stages, which were "news opportunity", "news assessment" and "further investigation".
In order for us to empathize with our users, we categorized our key findings into several behavioral variables. We then classified these findings into four personas. These personas have different motivations for accessing news and different needs for news platforms:
Comparative Analysis
Then, we made a comparative analysis. The goal of the comparative analysis was to analyze the features of existing competing products to gain insights into how the Yahoo App team can adjust the Yahoo App to be more attractive to Gen Z users. Based on the findings obtained in the user interview, we designed scoring criteria. We then selected ten products from the App Store's high score list. Below is a summary table of the analysis results.
Optimization direction
On the basis of the user interview and the comparative analysis, we summarized eight optimization directions.
Help users focus on things they are interested in
Push notifications on selected topics
Customized category theme on tabs
Filter out disliked news categories
Let users know about trends
Recommend hot search keywords
Recommend trending news in selected categories
Allow users to follow-up
Provides the feature of storing news for later viewing
Offers personalized broadcasts to receive follow-up information
Help users see multiple perspectives
Integrate relevant reports from multiple media outlets
Survey
Next, we conducted a survey. The purpose of this survey was to understand the optimization directions that need to be improved first from the user's point of view. Based on the results of the user interviews and comparative analysis described above, we designed a survey questionnaire. Then, we used Kano modeling in the survey. Finally, we found three attractive features that Generation Z users liked. Therefore, we translated these features into the following design suggestions.

We turned three attractive features that Generation Z users like into design suggestions.

Evaluative Research
Heuristic Evaluation
Because the team wanted to explore the problems with the Yahoo application interface, we conducted an heuristic evaluation. This evaluation was based on Jakob Nielsen's ten design principles. We listed two common scenarios when using the Yahoo app news feature. We then walked through the interface based on these two common scenarios and found 35 problems. Finally, we compiled a list of 8 interface issues that need to be improved first.
Interface Problems
Scenario 1:
Looking for specific contents
Inconsistent labeling of news sources
News sources may not be able to follow
After closing the news page, there is no way to find it again
Get lost when the app jumps to a web page
Scenario 2:
Browsing the news
The same interface has two buttons with the same function
Often accidentally close the news page
Unable to return to the previous page smoothly
Images, videos, and advertisements in the interface are arranged in a chaotic manner
Usability Test
Next, we conducted a usability test. We wanted to know what pain points and needs are reauired by Gen Z users. Five participants were recruited through forms. They were between the ages of 17 and 25, and were regular users of the news apps, but had not used the Yahoo app before. We asked them to test the Yahoo app and the apps they regularly used through scenarios we designed. Afterwards, we asked participants to compare the Yahoo app with the news apps they had used. In addition, we used the SUS scale and satisfaction ratings to understand the quantitative performance of the Yahoo app.
SUS average score
74.5 out of 100
Grade C, above SUS average
Recommended Average Score
6.4 out of 10
The positive feedback is about the convenience of operation. On the other hand, the negative feedback is related to the cluttered layout.
Optimization direction
After the heuristic evaluation and the usability test, we summarized ten interface problems that can be improved and proposed optimization direction.
Reduce Interface Interference
Able to pause homepage banner ads while browsing
Reduce ad size to avoid accidental clicks on ads
Reduce distracting ads on the home page
Enhance recommendation
Push ads that Gen Z users are interested in
Push news that Gen Z users are interested in
Recommend news that is highly relevant to viewed news
More current hot trends
The search feature provides hot search keywords
Add popular news on the homepage
Improve navigation
Reorganize text, image, and ads blocks on news pages
Group topics into categories to differentiate information

Reflection
This solid research has greatly improved my teamwork and research skills. Here are some of my thoughts to share with you.
Work with stakeholders
In this project, we were faced with two key stakeholders, one was the professor and the other was the Yahoo team. Since the stakeholders held different viewpoints, we needed to do more preparation in order to communicate with both sides smoothly and accurately. Eventually, I gained the ability to use different viewpoints to communicate with both sides.
Improve research depth
Prof. Stanley gave the team a lot of solid advice during this project. Also, the Yahoo team gave us a lot of ideas and inspiration. After this project, I can better grasp the essence of research methodology. This experience also made me more aware of the motivation and purpose of doing research in the future.
